stand and deliver
Next event
thursday 8th of june & 12 july
I am very excited to announce that Stand & Deliver story slam is back at the Poly. We will be presenting more exciting evenings of live storytelling where you, the audience, have the opportunity to take the spotlight and share a true story from your own life.
As host I invite you to put your name into one of two hats if you have a story to share.
Hat 1. Your Name
If your name is drawn you get five minutes to tell us your tale based on a theme. You can find the evenings theme on the venue website by clicking here, or via the tickets button below.
Hat 2. Anonymous Short Story
If you don't want to stand up and tell a story you can write an anonymous, single paragraph story that the host will read out on your behalf.
Of course, you can just come and listen to other people tell true stories from their lives.
This is not a competition but if we like your story a lot, we may ask you to come back and tell it at a grand slam in the future.
A few rules apply to the event in order to keep it friendly and safe. See below.

storytelling rules & freQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
There are a few simple rules, which are more about guidance than restriction, but as we want to protect our audience against cruelty and abuse, we do want some rules to be actual rules!
You will have approximately five minutes to tell your story, so try and be succinct. This is so we can hear as many stories in an eventing as possible. Also, keeps your stories sharp.
Your story can be funny, poignant, what ever you want, it just needs to be true.
You must tell your story from memory, without the aid of notes, written words or props.
Your story should have a start middle and end, where we can follow a narrative.
We want to hear a story where you are the main protagonist and we want to hear it from your perspective. It would be good if the event you relate to us changes you in some way.
This is about the art of storytelling. You know the story because you lived it, so tell it how it was. Tell it to us like we’re all friends sitting round table in the pub.
This is a storytelling event and not poetry or stand up. Neither is it a soap box so please, no rants.
The story must not be racist, sexist or homophobic in any way.

Content warning
In the interest of making Stand and Deliver a safer and more comfortable place, we give our storytellers the opportunity to announce content warnings before their stories. If necessary, these are read out before the story, giving people the chance to leave if they feel the need.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do I have to tell a story?
We understand that not everyone wants to stand up and tell a story and so we are very happy for you to just come and listen. You could always write a short story for Hat 2 Will I definitely get a chance to tell my story? It all depends on how many people want to tell a story. If there are only a handful of tellers then you may well be guaranteed a chance. However, if you don't put your name in Hat 1 then you definitely won't get the chance. Does my story have to be funny? Not everything that happens to us in life is funny so your story doesn't have to be funny either. It can be whatever you want it to be. However, we do often see the funny side of things even when they aren't necessarily good. If you can bring humour to a sad story then that can be light relief, and is welcome. |
Can I read my story?
Stand and Deliver is all about telling stories from memory, it gives the storytelling a lively edge, and allows for moments of spontaneity. Because of this we don't want people to read their stories out. You can write your story in advance but then trust it to memory. It's more fun. If you would like the opportunity to read your story out, you could always attend one of the bimonthly telltales events at the Princess pavilion. Information through the link below. [email protected] Can I tell a poem There are many opportunities in and around Falmouth to take part in spoken word poetry slams but this is the only true story event and because of that we prefer you not to tell us a poem. |
