Welcome
Story connects us. It tells us who we are.
As well as being the Southwest representative for the Society for Storytelling, I am an international, professional storyteller with a background in street theatre, illustration, drama and music. I live and work in Cornwall and have been telling stories, making theatre and running a wide range of workshops nationally and internationally for over 25 years.
Storytelling
I was drawn to storytelling when I was studying theatre at Cumbria College of Art and design in the early 90s. I came across the great storyteller Taffy Thomas, one evening, perchance, in rural Cumbria, and was immediately taken by this intriguing art form. Here was someone who could create theatre in my head with nothing more than his voice and the words he spoke. From that day I began to think about storytelling and make it more a part of my professional practice. I now tell stories internationally to the widest spectrum of audiences from pre school children to senior citizens, sometimes in the same session. I deliver story making and drama workshops and also train and mentor others in storytelling skills.
My work takes me to schools, museums, libraries and theatres, as well as non conventional venues such as fields, woodlands and railway stations. I tour storytelling shows to clubs and festivals across the UK and have taught storytelling skills to international students at the United World College in Flekke, Norway.
I have many years' experience of working in schools ,enhancing curriculum subjects for students and training teachers in drama and storytelling. I have expertise in sensory storytelling for people with multiple and profound learning difficulties and used to train others in this through a London based charity, Bag Books. I have also told stories and delivered workshops for Seven Stories, the National Centre for Children's Books. I am very keen to take storytelling to new audiences and to this end, I used to run The Storycafé evenings at a number of very nice cafes in and around the North East. I am developing new audiences in Cornwall and the South West.
Currently I am exploring the boundries of Zoom, the new performance arena that has sweapt the world since the pandemic came along and closed the public venues. I have become highly skilled at telling stories and connecting to audiences through this platform and offer workshops that will help others develop their own Zoom skills for online storytelling.
I have Full CRB and Public Liability and am a member of Equity, the actors union, and the Society for Storytellers.

Making sense of the world one story at a time.

THE StorIESI tell traditional stories from all around the world, mostly humorous, though I do tell serious stories too. I tailor story sessions to suit the themes of your event, indoor or out!
"Gary charmed the socks off our audience when he did a hot spot for us last year so we couldn't resist asking him back for the full monty! He has a lively, interactive style of telling, and is a dab hand at African drumming! His voice will mesmerise you and the stories will enchant you."
Sophie Snell. The Flying Donkeys storytelling club. Derby. 2013. "We were all left with a perfectly told example of a timeless story by Gary Cordingley. His telling of the story of the baker who wanted to charge a poor lad for breathing in the smell of his bread was engaging and memorable."

The frog and the Crow. This short film was made by Sammy Jetter Kell as a part of his degree in media
This short film documents ten years of work at the annual music festival on the isle of Jura, West Scotland.
Allow me to indulge in little moment where I was once famous in Belgium, but not for storytelling.

Storytellers, Patrick and Bridget, are the most unlikely couple you are likely to meet. Together, and sometimes apart, this pair of clowning fools have travelled the highways and byways of the land, gathering tales, songs and herbal remedies. Patrick and Bridget have been delighting audiences all over the land with their whacky, interactive performances since they first arrived from the all Ireland Pig Wrestling Championships in Tubacurrie, 20 years ago. Geography means that they are rarely together these days but when they are, such charming chaos and endearing escapades take place that they will have you rolling with laughter.
